Portable appliance safety

More than a sticker on a plug.

Damaged plugs, worn flexes and internal electrical faults are not always obvious during normal use. A planned inspection and testing programme helps you find unsafe equipment, protect people and maintain a clear record of how portable electrical risks are being managed.

PAT testing—technically in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment—combines a careful visual examination with the electrical tests appropriate to the appliance. The aim is simple: identify damage, deterioration or faults before equipment causes harm.

Important

UK law requires electrical equipment to be maintained so it does not cause danger, but it does not require every appliance to be tested annually. The right inspection and testing interval depends on the equipment, how it is used and the environment.

What’s included

A complete, traceable check.

We plan the visit around your site, appliance quantity and operating hours to keep disruption low and results easy to act on.

01

Visual examination

We check the appliance, plug, fuse, flex and casing for damage, overheating, poor repairs and other visible safety concerns.

02

Electrical testing

Suitable items receive the appropriate tests for their equipment class, which may include earth continuity and insulation checks.

03

Asset identification

Each tested item is identified so the result can be matched to the correct appliance, location and testing record.

04

Pass / fail result

Results are recorded clearly. Unsafe equipment is identified so it can be removed from use, repaired or replaced.

05

Labels & report

Where agreed, appliances receive a clear status label and you receive a digital record to support your maintenance system.

06

Next-test guidance

We help you consider a sensible review interval based on equipment type, use, movement, environment and previous results.

Need advice for a specific site or appliance list? Send it with your enquiry and we’ll help scope the visit.

What is PAT testing?+

PAT testing is the common name for examining electrical appliances and equipment to help confirm they are safe to use. It includes visual inspection and, where appropriate, electrical testing.

Is PAT testing required every year?+

No universal rule requires every appliance to be tested annually. Inspection and testing frequency should reflect the equipment, how often it is moved or used, the environment and previous results.

Which appliances can be checked?+

Typical items include kettles, microwaves, computers, monitors, printers, lamps, extension leads, vacuum cleaners, portable heaters and power tools. We confirm the scope before the visit.

What happens if an item fails?+

The failed result is recorded and the item is clearly identified so it can be taken out of service. Depending on the fault, it may need repair by a competent person or replacement.

Do I receive a certificate or report?+

Yes. The handover includes a digital record of the tested assets and their results. This helps you monitor equipment and demonstrate that an electrical maintenance system exists.

Does PAT testing replace an EICR?+

No. PAT testing concerns appliances and electrical equipment; an EICR assesses the fixed electrical installation, such as wiring, circuits, sockets and the consumer unit.
